Why box counts matter before you buy

Running short mid-install means a second trip to the store — and the new batch may not match the first dye lot exactly. Buying too many leaves sealed cartons in the garage for years.

A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft. At 10% waste that is 158 sq ft to buy. With 20 sq ft per box, that is 8 boxes — we round up automatically so you never buy too few.

Room → boxes examples (10% waste, 20 sq ft/box)

10×10 (100 sq ft) → 110 sq ft with waste → 6 boxes. 12×12 (144 sq ft) → 158 sq ft → 8 boxes. 12×15 (180 sq ft) → 198 sq ft → 10 boxes. 15×20 (300 sq ft) → 330 sq ft → 17 boxes.

Your carton coverage may be 18–24 sq ft — enter the label number above. For multi-room same-SKU jobs, add each room and buy one lot together.

Underlay and acclimation — plan before you click

Laminate floats over underlayment — order pad separately in the same square footage as your floor. See do I need underlay for laminate for foam vs cork choices.

Let cartons sit in the install room for 48 hours before opening. Our flooring acclimation guide explains temperature and humidity targets.

Waste allowance for straight, diagonal, and doorway-heavy rooms

Default 10% covers end cuts, mistakes, and future plank repairs on a simple rectangle. Hallways with many doorways, closets, or diagonal layouts may need 12–15%. Herringbone-style patterns (when using angle-cut laminate) push toward 18–20%.

The flooring waste guide walks through room-by-room factors. Keep one spare box from the same lot for patches — store it flat in a climate-controlled space.
