How are flooring boxes calculated?
Divide total square footage including waste by sq ft per box, then round up to the next whole number.
How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?
The store question is always “how many boxes?” — not square footage. Enter room size, waste, and sq ft per carton from your product label. We divide, round up, and show exactly what to put in your cart.

The box math in plain terms
Total sq ft with waste ÷ sq ft per box = boxes needed. Always round up — a 7.2 box result means buy 8 boxes.
A 15×12 room (180 sq ft) with 10% waste is 198 sq ft. At 22 sq ft per box, that is 9 boxes. Enter your exact dimensions above for your project.
Multi-room same-SKU shopping
Add every room that shares one product code, then apply waste once to the combined area. Mixing dye lots across a continuous sightline (open kitchen-living) shows as colour shifts in sunlight.
Different products per room (tile bath, laminate hall) need separate calculator runs — do not average coverage across SKUs.
Where to find sq ft per box
Every laminate, LVP, and tile carton prints coverage on the label — usually 18–24 sq ft for laminate, 15–20 sq ft for tile. Big-box listings sometimes round; trust the physical box at the store.
See our how many flooring boxes guide for worked examples across room sizes. Need a materials budget too? Use the flooring cost estimator.
Leftover planks, dye lots, and future repairs
A partly used last box is normal — that is your waste allowance plus remainder. Keep extra planks or tiles from the same dye lot for future patches.
Dye lots change between production runs. Buy all boxes from the same lot number printed on the carton wrapper. Photograph the lot stamp before you recycle cartons.

Frequently asked questions
What if my last box is only partly used?
That is normal. The leftover is your waste allowance plus partial-box remainder. Keep extra planks for future repairs.
Can I enter price per box?
Yes. Optional price per box gives an estimated total and shows roughly how much of your spend goes to waste material.
How many flooring boxes for a 12×12 room?
144 sq ft + 10% waste = 158.4 sq ft to buy. At 20 sq ft per box that is 8 boxes; at 24 sq ft per box it is 7 boxes. Enter your carton coverage above — do not guess from a generic average.
