Laminate vs Vinyl Plank (LVP) — Which Should You Buy?

Compare waterproofing, install method, feel, price, and resale for laminate versus luxury vinyl plank.

Key differences

WPC (wood-plastic composite) LVP feels warmer and quieter; SPC (stone-plastic) is denser and more dent-resistant under fridge feet and pet claws. Both are waterproof at the core — seams and perimeter still need good install practice.

  • Laminate: wood fiber core — swells with prolonged water; often cheaper at entry level
  • LVP: plastic core (WPC/SPC) — waterproof; softer underfoot; glue-down or click
  • Both float over underlay except glue-down LVP
  • LVP tolerates basements and kitchens better

When laminate still wins

Dry rooms where you prefer a more rigid feel underfoot and sharper click-lock. Premium laminate with AC5 can outwear budget LVP. Compare specific products, not categories alone.

If resale buyers in your area expect a “wood-like” click and you have no basement moisture history, mid-grade laminate often costs less per room than comparable LVP.

Room-by-room decision tree

Run both material paths in the vinyl plank calculator and laminate calculator with the same room list to compare box counts.

  • Basement / slab: waterproof LVP with vapor-rated underlay
  • Kitchen / mudroom: LVP or waterproof laminate — not standard laminate
  • Bedrooms (dry): laminate or LVP — preference and budget
  • Whole-house one SKU: LVP simplifies wet-adjacent zones

Underlay and attached pad

Many LVP lines ship with attached pad — do not add a second foam layer unless the manufacturer allows it. Laminate usually needs separate underlay; on concrete, use a vapor-barrier product. See do I need underlay for laminate.

Budget the underlay square footage to match buy area with waste. It is a separate line item from boxes at most big-box stores.

Cost and box-count reality check

Entry laminate often wins on price per sq ft, but waterproof LVP can win total project cost when you avoid future swell repairs in kitchens. Compare the same room list in both calculators, then price the actual cartons — not category averages.

After you pick a winner, buy one dye lot for every continuous sightline. Transitions hide material changes between rooms better than mid-room seams.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix laminate and LVP in one house?

Yes, with transitions at doorways. Match height and color family for a cohesive look — use reducers if thickness differs.
